Tips for SEO: 50 Action Items to Improve any SEO Strategy

On October 8 and 9, 2014, a number of Amsive Digital team members had the opportunity to attend our second annual C3 event in New York City. Not only did we get to network with various industry professionals and hear keynotes from some of the best minds in the business, we took away a great deal of tips for SEO – tips we can implement into our strategies on a daily basis.

  1. Don’t take yourself too seriously
  2. For brands: hire an agency with a good record
  3. Create content for every stage of the buyer’s journey
  4. Review your robots.txt file
  5. Put your brand name last in the title tag
  6. Repurpose old content
  7. Manually schedule emails of Google Analytics monthly reports
  8. Add rel=canonical tags to fix sitewide duplication issues
  9. Map content to buyer personas
  10. Within Adwords, link your Google Webmaster Tool account
  11. Normalize your NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) info for local search
  12. Build competitive strategies based on SEO competition and not traditional business competition                     
  13. Check the ratio of indexed pages in search engines ( with your XML sitemap
  14. When diagnosing link profiles, never rely on one platform to tell the whole story
  15. Measure performance based on content segmentation
  16. Markup your site – learn vocabulary
  17. Trust your SEO expert
  18. Create “brand experience” content
  19. Search like a human, not a robot
  20. When thinking of engaging in international SEO campaigns, make relevant content for those various properties
  21. Don’t obsess over daily or even weekly data points
  22. Use dashes (-) not pipes (|) in your title tags to break up keywords
  23. For international sites, do not use auto-translate – hire a professional translator
  24. Don’t oversaturate content – pick 1-2 keywords to target per each piece of content
  25. Be unique at all times
  26. Sites hosted on servers in their own country will rank better
  27. Use natural language URLs
  28. Optimize with your mouth, not your fingertips – the switch to voice search is beginning to play a bigger role in search
  29. Use latent semantic indexing (LSI) keywords
  30. Preview content as a different user agent

  32. Authorship is dead, author rank is alive and well – give yourself credit
  33. Understand different ways users search on different types of search engines & devices
  34. Use category market share reports (share of voice reporting) to help you find display opportunities
  35. Find new & current keyword ideas using a reddit or subreddit search
  36. Find and fix “click here” links & optimize that anchor text
  37. Use Screaming Frog or Xenu to avoid spot-checking your sites’ metadata, URLs, & headers
  38. Optimize video assets
  39. Identify strongest TLD (Top Level Domain) to partner with for your brand
  40. Use the data highlighter
  41. Internally link higher authority pages within your own site to boost rankings
  42. Search for duplicate product descriptions across the web & differentiate yours
  43. Metrics coming from SEO tools have no business success relation
  44. Look for dead links in Wikipedia to use in your favor
  45. Identify highest priority keywords and develop better data by sharing with the paid team
  46. Think about branded search and how you want to manage your presence
  47. SEO is a marathon, not a sprint – be patient
